The studio was purpose built and acoustically treated to be a great drum room. It simply has a great natural sound for drums so good results are achieved just by whacking a few mics up and playing. It is nice and lively with the option of using baffles to create a more deadened sound when required.
There are four top notch drum kits in the room from Yamaha, Pearl and Mapex, as well as lots of snare drums in steel, brass and wood, ranging from 10″ in diameter up to 14″ and a range of depths. This means that pretty much any snare sound can be achieved with the right tuning and head selection.
Cymbals are all Zildjian and are a mixture of Constantinople,s, K,s, A,s and a couple of Z,s for heavier tracks. Again, the range of different sizes and weights means that any song can be catered for.
On the other side, a mix of Yamaha HS8 monitor speakers, Focusrite pre-amps, and microphones from Shure, AKG, Rode, Karma and a wonderful custom built Sub kick means that up to 16 channels of high quality drum sound can be recorded. This often means that various ambient mics are employed as well as a separate hi-hat mic, two bass drum, two snare and close mics on all toms.
