What Is An Online Session Drummer?

The term ‘Online session drummer’ or ‘Remote session drummer’ is quite new to many people. And in fact, it is relatively new to the music industry really.

So what is an online session drummer?

In short, it is any drummer that has access to drum recording facilities so that they can record drum tracks for clients and then deliver them via internet file sharing sites to a client anywhere in the world.

The reason that I say this is relatively new is because only in recent years has god quality recording equipment become affordable, and only in recent years have people’s internet connections become fast and reliable enough to share high quality WAVs.

What are the benefits?

The main benefits are cost to the client. In the past the cost of hiring a commercial studio, engineer and session drummer was so high that most independent songwriters and musicians just could not afford it. Just to record one song was well beyond the means of may of us. And so they were resigned to using samples, backing tracks, or programmed drums.

As a result they lacked the creativity and human feel that live musicians bring to the table. It also emphasised the gulf between the high end major label productions, and the amateur song writer with his bedroom Casio keyboard.

Now however, that gulf has narrowed significantly. One huge factor in this is the rise of the online session drummer. Now, from anywhere in the world, you can email an excellent drummer and tell him exactly what you want for your song.

Not Just Cheap

But, this isn’t just a budget option. Over the years I have been to many studios. Some great, some not so great. And it has surprised me in some cases that despite all their wonderful equipment: Neve desks, Neumann microphones and Fairchild Compressors, they have still achieved a poor sound.

This is part of the reason that I started offering this service because I realised that people were paying a lot of money to get my drums on a track, but the result wasn’t always as good as it should have been for the money. And that was due to studio deficiencies. Ever heard the expression, “All the gear but no idea?”

And what is so great about an online session drummer, is that, in my case, I have a custom designed room. It was set up purely to sound good for drum recording. The microphones were purchased purely for drum recording. All my knowledge is learnt purely for drum recording. It’s a specialist environment.

And what’s more, the fee is charged per project and not per hour. This means that I can take the time to try different drum tunings, different microphone positions, different drums. I can experiment and be creative without an impatient producer getting bored or worrying about the studio bill.

And so I feel that many times, the result I can achieve here is actually better than might be achieved in a big, and very expensive studio.

Take your time

But more than that, the slower nature of reviewing recordings also benefits the artist. In a commercial studio you will have to make decisions very quickly, unless you have lots of money to waste. But with an online session drummer, the MP3 is sent to you for review. You can then listen over to the drum recording all night if you want to get a clear picture of whether it is right for you.

If you then decide you want it done again, you simply email or phone the instructions over and the drums will be recorded again. That is unheard of in a commercial studio unless you are Metallica recording the black album!

So in a nut shell that is what an online session drummer does. They enable practically every song writer and musician to have excellent, professional, real drum tracks on their recordings so that they can realise their musical vision without breaking the bank.
